Switchfoot’s charismatic singer, Jon Foreman is stepping to the stage to perform a series of solo shows this fall following his four series EPs, “Wonderlands,” set to be released throughout this year.

Foreman steps front and center to make several stops throughout the US, and will be headlining at the Pomona Glass House on Sept. 23.

Foreman’s performance follows the release of his two EPs “Sunlight” and “Shadows,” just half of a decade long music project. His song cycle of four EPs includes 24 songs and over the past 10 years, Foreman has worked with with 24 co-producers, conspirators and special guests to create this one of a kind collection.

Each EP is an ode to a different part of the day, and the remaining two, “Darkness” and “Dawn” are set to be released later this year.

Foreman, a prolific writer, musician and performer, shares with his fans a deep collection of songs and stated earlier this year that this series of EPs reflects his connection to music.

“My world has always been mapped out by music,” shares Foreman. “Even when I was a kid, songs were my landscape – a place to run to, a place to figure things out, a place to express the inexpressible. With The Wonderlands, I wanted to create a planet of my own: a world built out of songs. My hope is that listeners will find a new landscape to call their own.”

His stage presence and overall personality radiates off the stage and transforms his shows into an intimate moment that won’t easily be forgotten.

The Glass House, a small, all ages venue located in Downtown Pomona, and is known for its intimate setting and has housed a variety of bands from new comers to seasoned rock stars.

Tickets for Foreman’s show are available now, and can be purchased here.

Sonos Play:1: Full Volume Please

Sonos_Photo_HeroProducts_45_Black_LRG_RGB

So I go to a lot of shows, and I mean a lot. Some may ask, “doesn’t it get boring going to so many concerts?” Honesty, no it doesn’t. I love live music and the energy you get when you get mixed in the crowd.

That being said, sound is the main sense in any musical experience (duh), whether it be at a live concert or through a pair of home speakers. The sound quality can really make or break some songs, and after getting my hands on Sonos Play:1, I can say without a doubt that they’ve certainly elevated my musical experience outside of the concert pit for several reasons.

The Set Up
I’m not very tech savvy, but the set up for Sonos Play:1 was very nonthreatening and simple enough to follow — plug it in, go to Sonos’ website, press a button and sync! Within a few minutes, even I was ready to roll.

The Choices
Now with Sonos, one of its best features is that its wireless. Aside from a power cord you’re really not limited to where you can put it. Pair that with its compact body and the ability to control it with your laptop or smart phone, you can take charge of your music or playlists quite easily.

The choices don’t stop there though. So, once you’ve found the perfect spot for your Play:1, you have so many ways to stream the music you love. Personally, I took advantage of Pandora because of its great variety of music, and Spotify, for the killer playlist choices (thanks Mattson).

Those two were just my favorites, but, there are countless ways to stream music through these speakers — Amazon Music, iHeartRadio and Soundcloud just to name a few. If anything, you can stream the music already downloaded onto your laptop, and anyway you stream, Play:1 gives you the opportunity to hear it with superb quality, which brings me to my next point.

The Sound
Let’s get to the main reason why I love Sonos Play1. The sound is phenomenal. At full volume it’s definitely loud enough to be heard from a good distance and there’s no static, feedback or distortion, just clean, crisp and sharp sound.

As someone who listens to a lot of different genres, I thoroughly enjoyed the sound produced by Play:1. Every hook, bass line, guitar strum and singer’s croon was heard beautifully.

Sonos Play:1
Play:1 gets my strong approval for in-home speakers. No matter what your living arrangements may be, these nifty little speakers will impact your musical experience in a big way.

Atlas Genius at the San Diego House of Blues

By pcsanchez7505

DSC_1641

It’s a delightful occurance to find a genuine band with honest answers and reflective lyrics. It’s even more exciting to find a band that cares enough to stick around for their fans after the show. Australian rock stars Atlas Genius accomplish all of the above and put on a performance worth writing about.

Atlas Genius stepped on stage at the San Diego House of Blues just days after their release of sophomore album “Inanimate Objects,” and was able to create a moment of unity that transcended from artists to fans.

Brothers Michael and Keith Jeffery were accompanied by touring band mates as they played a mix of songs off their two albums, and while their new album was released only days earlier, fans sang along to nearly every tune played that night.

Earlier in the night The Shelters and Dreamers opened up respectively, with very sweet sets of their own. Dreamers, a band from Long Island, New York, played comfortably on stage and grabbed the attention of fans when they played one of their more popular song, “Wolves.”

Later in the night, Atlas Genius took to the stage with all the power and grace of seasoned musicians.

The band jumped right into an older single, “Symptoms” before sliding into “Refugees,” off “Inanimate Objects.”

Halfway through their set, the band surprised fans with a fun, upbeat rendition of Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round.”

Throughout the night singer Keith was very engaging toward his audience and made a spectacular effort to make a connection with his fans. The whole band moved together seamlessly and fell into place with their own stage dynamics.

After nearly an hour and a half of playing, the band even stayed after to meet fan, take pictures and sign merch.

From start to finish, the energy that night was very inviting, and Keith, Michael were able to bring out the essence of their second album — that is, good music and meaningful moments stick and resonate with you in a way that goes beyond molecular structure or reason.

Atlas Genius will be back in SoCal in October to open up for Passion Pit.

Allie X makes her LA debut at the Bootleg

By pcsanchez7505

DSC_1174

Can we all agree that the X in Allie X stands for Xtraordinary?

OK, now that that pun is out of the way, we can talk about Allie X’s LA debut which was nothing short of bizarre — and I mean that in the best way possible.

The night started out unassuming, in a bar on the outskirts of Downtown Los Angeles. The Bootleg, a wine and beer only venue I found out, opened its doors to an eclectic crowd of fans who came out to see not just a concert, but a theatrical performance, and it’s no stretch to say fans got what they came for.

With Allie X’s classically trained voice, strange stage antics and unique style, LA was given a taste of something a little x-tra (had one more in me) Saturday night.

The Canadian born singer started out on stage dressed in a white tutu like outfit, a black bow around her waist and a stylish pair of bug eye shades. She jumped right into a popular single and kept the momentum going with songs such as “Catch,” “Hello” and “Sanctuary.”

Trace, the opening act for the night, also contributed to the night’s electric energy. The trio came on stage with an equally unearthly sound and even wowed the crowd with a cover of Beyoncé’s “Halo.”

During Allie X’s performance, the young singer careened on stage, twirled around, dropped to her knees, stood perfectly still and even made taking off sunglasses an eerily dramatic ordeal.

After the show, she stayed around to take pictures and talk with fans. All in all, her debut in LA was met with a lot of enthusiasm and appreciation, which the singer returned as well.

Judging by her honest music and adorning stage presence, it’s easy to tell Allie X is NOT your typical singer, by no means a role model, but absolutely energy charged and ready to ignite.

Earlier this year, Allie X released CollXtion I, her debut EP which was received well by fans and critics alike.

Her fun blend of pop and Indie mixed with a dynamic and unorthodox stage presence makes her an artist to watch, as many already have.

For more information about her music, fans can check out her website here.

Keith Jeffery from Atlas Genius talks new album and touring

By pcsanchez7505

Atlas Genius, the wonderfully unique band from Adelaide, Australia, has come back two years after their debut album to release “Inanimate Objects,” out August 28.

In the midst of a busy tour that will take the band to San Diego on Sept. 2, singer Keith Jeffery took some time to answer a few questions about their new album and touring.

Q: What was the recording process like for this album?
A: It was a long process in comparison to the first one. And there were a bunch of times where I nearly lost my mind. Creating this…there were so many ways you could go, and we really wanted to explore a bunch of new territory with this album. At the same time with it being really exciting, it can be a bit daunting at times when you’re going down the rabbit hole, and you may not be sure where you’re going for a week or two. Like you can start working on a song and there’s something good about it but it’s still formulating…it’s slowly becoming a song in front of you but…I think when you’re really trying to push the boundaries with what you’re doing currently there’s also, there’s some anxiety that comes with it…I don’t think we’re the band that ever wanted to keep writing the same couple of songs for the rest of their career. Although doing that probably would have been a lot easier had we tried to rewrite “Trojans” or “If So.”

Q: Yeah, well “Trojans” gained a lot of momentum when it hit the states and elsewhere. That wasn’t something you thought about with “Inanimate Objects”?
A: Well I think that the only thing we really did that was similar to what we did with “Trojans” or the first album is that we really didn’t try to conform to any sort of style…you know I think this album is very different from the first album. The thought process behind it is very similar in that we didn’t want to recreate anything. “Trojans” is the first single that came out and we were still working on the rest of the album. There were no other songs that were like an imitation of that song, and I think part of the success with “Trojans” is just it was an honest song that felt very inspired at the time, so the thought with this album was to do the same…if you listen to the charts, what’s popular or what’s streaming at the moment, you end up chasing, and then you just become…you’d be crazy to try and follow it. We just went with our gut and really didn’t consider anything else…we weren’t thinking too much about the last album.

Q: Ok, this album is a lot more serious and even dark at times. What is that a reflection of?
A: I think as individuals that’s where the band is. Lyrically I felt like I went through some darker times. You know it wasn’t full on clinical depression, but you know there is that place toward depression that I think is a very real thing which we experienced after spending so much time on the road. Just the reality of doing that…also, we went back to Australia for a bit of time. I was in Australia for four months writing the album in the beginning, and I felt it was very isolated from what we had been doing while touring. And just the stimulation of playing in front of a crowd, you know we were very fortunate that we had some amazing crowds that we played to and really supportive fans over that period of time, so to be away from them as well was kind of like it was strange. It’s like going to school every day and seeing your friends and then all of a sudden, school is out, and you know you’re on your own. And also, I went through a couple of break ups through the period of time because it was quite a long period of time before the album, and I don’t think I ever had time to process those personal parts of my life before we took time to write, so it was all there waiting to be processed like a pile of paperwork I had to get through once we finished touring.

Q: What are you hoping people get out of this album?
A: I’m hoping that people with a similar mindset than myself or Michael…like when we finished this album we thought it was a good representation of us as artists, and it’s an intangible thing, but I think when you listen to an album or song, when it’s the right song for you it sort of, it really resonates with your molecules in some weird way. And I hope that people that hear this album and it moves them in a way…like the albums that I loved growing up did to me, so I think that that’s what it is. Whether it’s feelings of joy or feeling down about something…I think our album is pretty dynamic. It’s definitely a darker album, but there’s certainly a bunch of different vibes that travel through this album. It’s a bit of a journey.

Q: Definitely. In a press release you said each song is like an intimate moment that explodes. Is that what you mean by wanting this album to resonate with likeminded individuals?
A: Yeah, personally I like to find the singular moments and magnify them to turn them into pieces of art as opposed to writing about grand themes. To me I find the personal interactions that you have with another human being are the most powerful and moving experiences you could go through. Those are the moments I find myself reflecting on way too much…the ones with a girlfriend or close friend or whatever. Those moments end up becoming songs.

I think when you listen to an album or song, when it’s the right song for you it sort of, it really resonates with your molecules in some weird way.

Q: Is there a particular moment or song that you feel most attached to?
A: I think “Friends with Enemies” and “Levitate” are probably the two songs where I really put myself out there. Those songs, they take me right back to a specific moment in my life. Of course no one else knows exactly what that is, but I think there is enough pain and emotion coming through those songs that people get a good idea.

Q: You mentioned recording part of the album in Australia, and then bringing the recording out to LA – what was that like? Did you come for inspiration or to seek a different energy?
A: Oh, definitely that’s why we came here…LA’s got a really great music scene at the moment. I think there’s a lot of people…there’s a lot of small time studios here. One of my friend’s in a band that we toured with has one. It’s also a lot more affordable here than in other parts of the world. A lot of musicians have tended to move out here in the last few years. I think being amongst all that was great. There were pros and cons, but I think that it was the right decision for us to come over here.

Q: OK, well with your current tour, what do you hope to bring to the stage?
A: I think you aim for the shows, so that in the hour or so we’re there that they…I would love it to be us becoming just one group of people in the same space being somewhat teleported from the everyday life. I think that whenever I go to a show and it’s a show that really affects me and connects with me, I forget about all the other bullshit in my life at that moment, and I think our job is really to take people away from their daily troubles for the hour or so that we’re on stage. Successfully that’s what should happen I think each time we step on stage.

You can see Atlas Genius on Sept. 2 at the San Diego House of Blues or on Oct. 28 with Passion Pit at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

The band’s latest album “Inanimate Objects is available for pre-order on the band’s website and drops August 28.

Tony Hawk Foundation brings together a sweet mix of skateboarders and musicians

By pcsanchez7505

DSC_9422

No one could have said it better than Ben Harper when he noted that musicians and skateboarders go together like peanut butter and chocolate. The acclaimed musician and skateboard enthusiast was just one half of a dynamic duo who helped create the Boards and Bands charity fundraiser that lets both passions collide.

His partner in crime is none other than the Bird Man himself, Tony Hawk, who in 2002 started the Tony Hawk Foundation to help build skate parks around the United States for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have any other outlet or means to skateboard in a safe environment.

Together, the two took their talents and passions to bring together skateboarding legends and celebrated musicians to create a one of a kind charity.

Boards and Bands puts up for auction, skateboards used by famous skateboarders who had their favorite musicians write the lyrics on the boards. Past participants include Paul McCartney, who signed and wrote the lyrics to the song “Blackbird” on Hawk’s skateboard.

“It is unbelievably cool that we get to do this and the fact that these boards come through, and that the artists respond and it resonates with them as well,” said Hawk. “Maybe they don’t necessarily skate, but they understand the need, and they understand our mission, and like I said it has been an incredible project…”

Both Hawk and Harper noted what an incredible opportunity this project has been, and how awe inspiring the list of participating musicians and skateboarders has grown to become.

“This is ‘Candle in the Wind’ ladies and gentleman. This isn’t some Ben Harper shit,” said Harper. “This is Elton John right here…Musicians expect and revere skaters, and a lot of musicians wish they were skaters. And I know a lot of skaters that wish they were musicians, it’s kind of like who put my peanut butter in my chocolate…but it works

The Auction will continue for the next two weeks. Those wishing to bid on a board can do so here.

Boys of Zummer Tour Awaken the Sleep Train Amphitheatre

By pcsanchez7505

DSC_9074

It’s a little ironic that during their rowdy Boys of Zummer tour, Fall Out Boy made a stop at a place called the Sleep Train Amphitheatre, but they did, and we are ever so grateful they were able to give us a taste of pure adrenaline.

Now, the Boys of Zummer line up may seem like a weird pair, Wiz Khalifa, the bad boy of rap and weed opening up for Fallout Boy, the fantastically emo/alt-rock band, doesn’t seem like the greatest match up.

It’s even weirder when you consider Khalifa’s set time was just as long as Fallout Boy’s slot, and while I imagine there are few fans who dab their musical palate into both genres, once there, many found the pairing to be oddly satisfying.

Saturday night started out with singer/rapper Hoodie Allen. His set, while short, was enthusiastically performed and fueled no doubt, with all the energy of a Rock Star. Allen mixed his own collection of work with a few covers, including a song from Blink 182.

Allen’s set was followed by a short DJ intermission followed by a rather (sexually) graphic video segment to introduce Wiz Khalifa.

Khalifa sauntered on stage and broke right into a party boy swag that carried him through the night. He sang and rapped his way through song after song, smiling, posing and asking the crowd “where the stoners at?”

During a short intermission, Khalifa’s pianist stepped on stage, lit a joint and proceeded to casually play a beautiful and slowed down rendition to the beginning of “Young, Wild and Free.”

While his weed infused set didn’t appeal to everyone, those that were there for Wiz were more than pleased with his set that included songs such as “So High” and “You and Your Friends.”

By the time it came down to Fall Out Boy, fans were more than ready to rock out. The band stepped on stage and opened up with “Sugar We’re Going Down,” an old fan favorite.

Fall Out Boy’s set was a great mix of older material and new songs off their recent album. Young and old fans alike sang along to nearly every tune and got especially excited when the band stepped off stage to play an acoustic set halfway through their performance.
Patrick Stump (vocals, guitar), Pete Wentz (bass, backing vocals), Joe Trohman (guitar, backing vocals) and Andy Hurley (drummer) had a great energy that shook the entire stadium, and not one fan was left sitting.

Fall Out Boy fans let loose Saturday night and had a hell of a time with a band that has been around for over a decade.

If you get the chance to see them, I highly recommend it – even if it’s just to satisfy your high school obsession.

Downtown Fullerton gets a taste of Locals Only Music

By pcsanchez7505

Wildling at an underground performance in Claremont College.

In a place saturated with musical talent, LA’s KROQ radio station helps music fans find some of the most unique artists in the area. The radio station partners with Downtown Fullerton’s Slide Bar to bring SoCal free music every month.

On August 20, KROQ and the Slide Bar will host four up and coming bands from the LA area. Join Bonavox, Island Apollo, Wildling and Ceasefire for a night of free music. All these bands have been featured in KROQ’s Local Only playlist, and are in the midst of making a name for themselves.

About the bands

Bonavox: What started as a casual jam session turned into a musical act whose counterparts hail from all over the world – Brazil and Sweden just to name a few. Bonavox came together in Pasadena, and the band’s song “Fallen Angel” won a Grammy U award. The band’s line up has been through some changes in the past year, but with new singer John Flanagan, they’re ready to introduce fans to their new sound.

Island Apollo: This fun and exciting band hails from Irvine. After forming under a previous name, the band changed to Island Apollo after gaining a considerable following as teens. Comparable to Bad Suns, Island Apollo’s sound is fun, reflective and filled with infectious hooks.

Wildling: Wildling, formed less than a year ago, may be new as a band, but its line up consists of several members that have been in the music business for a while. With a fresh sound and hopeful lyrics, the band, who hails straight out of Los Angeles, falls somewhere in between a softer Indie sound and foot-thumping alternative rock. Wildling is currently in the midst of releasing an EP and gearing up for two tours this fall and winter.

Ceasefire: An alternative band from Orange County, Ceasefire formed in 2011 with band members Ray Alexander (vocals), Kamren Alexander (guitar) and Anthony Hainsworth (drums). The band’s sound can be described as an uplifting mix of great vocals, beautiful lyrics and winding instrumentals. Catch all four bands August, 20 at the Slide Bar, located on 122 E Commonwealth Ave., in Downtown Fullerton. Doors open at 8 p.m., and is a 21 and over show.

Miguel: Wild Heart Let Loose in Los Angeles

By pcsanchez7505

DSC_5749

Miguel, the acclaimed Grammy winning singer and rising Hip Hop artist, performed or rather, made musical love to a select few at the Sonos Studio in Los Angeles.

Monday night was filled with buzz and excitement as fans lined up outside the small venue — maximum capacity reaches just 250 people — to see the high rising “Wildheart” artist.

The sultry and passionate singer, accompanied by his band, sung, danced and serenaded an invite only crowd in the snug and alluring venue.

Miguel’s performance, like his single “Coffee,” was steamy, rich and at times a little bitter for the swooning women could only see, not touch the chiseled performer.

In the mix of a short, but lively performance Miguel also found time to deliver a string of heartfelt and inspiring pep talks. His main message of the night — celebrate your differences, and never be afraid to love who you are.

“Life is beautiful,” said Miguel after closing the show with his single “Adorn.” “So stay well. Live your passion. Live your truth.”

Hailing from San Pedro, California, Miguel felt right at home in the heart of Los Angeles. He eagerly embraced fans into his family of Los Angelinos, giving praise to various cities, races and nationalities that make up his eclectic hometown.

Based off of Monday’s performance, it’s easy to see why the young singer has gained so much popularity throughout the years. He is a fierce, tender and truly passionate performer with all the swagger of a Hip Hop artist and the tenacity of a true Rock and Roll band. Not to mention his voice comes piercing through with almost no effort at all — big props to Sonos for having brilliant acoustics.

Miguel’s performance was just one of many free concerts set up by Sonos Studio located on La Brea Avenue, a charming and lively block in Hollywood. Future shows this month include Allen Stone Monday July 27.

Currently, Miguel is on tour for his new album, “Wildheart,” and will be back in Southern California late August and early September.
