For my birthday (I turn 30 on September 18th!), I received a gigantic slow cooker that I’ve been coveting for months! As the mother of a blended family of seven, we feed a lot of mouths; especially during the busy fall and winter months. This slow cooker is large and in charge and can cook an entire chicken. People who know me, know about my deep love for my slow cooked food, so I couldn’t wait to try roasting a Tyson® Cornish Hen in my shiny new kitchen toy.

To start, you’ll clean out the inside of the hen. I have the hardest time with this, so I enlisted the help of my sweet husband. Any man willing to stick his hand up a bird’s rear for you is a keeper, ladies.

I love cooking with Tyson Cornish Hens because they’re all natural with no artificial ingredients or preservatives and no added hormones or steroids. Plus, for my family two cornish hens are the perfect amount to feed everyone a decent portion. They’re also a great year-round meal since they can be baked, slow cooked, or even grilled!

Fill the rear end of your bird with a bay leaf, some garlic, and a few peppercorns.

Next you’ll place the hen inside your slow cooker.

Top it with some Kikkoman® Soy Sauce and some sliced onion.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll add extra bay leaves to the top. I just love that aroma. Plus, a good sprinkling of basil. Cook the hen on low for eight hours.

Once your Tyson Cornish Hen is finished cooking, remove it from the slow cooker and onto a platter to rest for 10 to 15 minutes before carving into it. This will help your chicken to become incredibly juicy and melt in your mouth tender and leave you with a perfectly roasted cornish hen. You fancy, huh?

My kiddos love this flavorful chicken, enhanced with Kikkoman Soy Sauce, which makes a versatile flavor enhancer for any food; not just Asian cuisine. In fact, I use Kikkoman in my meatloaf and several chicken dishes and it’s especially divine on a Tyson Cornish Hen. There’s just something about the way the flavors marry together into juicy poultry perfection!

Perfectly Roasted Cornish Hen
Ingredients
  • one cornish hen
  • one cup soy sauce
  • one small onion, roughly chopped
  • teaspoon peppercorns
  • one bay leaf
  • two teaspoons dried basil

Instructions
  1. Clean out the innards of the hen and rinse out.
  2. Add half the onion, peppercorns, and bay leaf to the inside of the hen.
  3. Place hen in slow cooker.
  4. Top with basil and soy sauce.
  5. Cook on high for 6-8 hours or until inside temperature reaches 165F.
