5 Ways to Conserve Water During the California Drought

My family lives in the Southern California High Desert and we are proud desert rats. We enjoy our lives here in the sun and love the mild winter, but we are in one of the worst droughts in California history. Even us desert dwellers are feeling the strain and have had to work even harder to conserve water. I’ve partnered with Scott’s® to share some new ways to conserve water, including their new EveryDrop™ water maximizer for lawns and landscapes.

1. Implement a no-baths rule

My two boys are both five, which is definitely old enough to start a showers only rule. Showers are quicker and use less water than a bath would. For me, I don’t even need a daily shower and try to take one every other day. Not only does it conserve water, but my hair and skin are healthier too!

2. Recycle gray water

When you wash your clothing, did you know that you can save that water for your plants? Use a system that collects the water when your machine drains and recuse that water for your plants or landscaping. I’d probably steer clear of using it for a garden (soap residue), but it’s perfect to water plants that are purely for curb appeal.

3. Use Scott’s® new EveryDrop™

EveryDrop™ is a water maximizer for lawns and landscapes that is designed to help move water into the soil (even in dry desert soils like mine!). It’s is a unique blend of wetting agents designed to help move water into the soil, consistently and evenly. This helps to reduce wasteful runoff and pooling. Whether relying on rain, sprinklers or hoses, EveryDrop™ helps to make the most of available water, which in my desert home, is so beneficial! 4. Convert to desert landscaping

Perhaps growing up in the desert made me bias, but I love cactus and desert landscaping. But if your yard is full of grass, chances are this drought has caused it to burn and yellow. Consider converting your landscape to desert friendly and drought resistant plants. You may also want to try replacing your indoor plants with succulents and cacti as they need much less water to survive. I adore my little cactus garden in my bedroom.

5. Try a rain barrel

My husband and I have discussed this idea in length and are considering purchasing a few rain barrels for our own home. Not only would a rain barrel help your family conserve water, but if you despise the thought of desert landscaping, these barrels can rescue your lush lawn. You can use the water collected on your lawn, garden, plants, and more!
