Mother’s Day is coming up and as a serial over-celebrator, I am excited about having an opportunity to show some affection to the mothers (including my own) in my life. I don’t know that I ever truly understood a mother’s love until I became one myself. Being a mom gave me a whole new understanding of my own mother and a heart of compassion when I watched my little sister become a mom herself. The three of us share a deep bond in our motherhood, loving our children fiercely and with all we have to make our families as tight as they are. On Mother’s Day, I love celebrating all types of mothers (like my younger sis!) including my own.
My mom is a police officer (currently working as an animal cruelty detective) and growing up, I knew my mother was different from the other kids and that my family wasn’t the norm. My mom spent her days and nights chasing bad guys. Holidays and birthdays were scheduled around whichever shift she was assigned to that month. Christmas day call outs weren’t unusual and my sister and I quickly learned a strong resilience that now translates into our own families. Looking back, I’m not sure how she did the job she did of apprehending crooks, dealing with the lowest of the low, seeing abuse and neglect, but then coming home to dye our milk green in time for St. Patrick’s Day or to decorate the house on our actual birthdays to make us feel special. You guys, I had (and still have!) a real deal Holyfield super mom.
And as for my sister? As different as we are, we are equally as similar. She inherited our mother’s strong spirit and became a police officer herself after serving in the Navy. She left the force after having her baby boy when her husband, a Marine, was given orders to Southern California. They found out they were pregnant soon after with my little niece. An ex-cop, a military spouse, and probably most impressive, a back to back mama. My sister is the toughest chick I know and my best friend.
On Mother’s Day, I celebrate both of these women along with the other strong mothers who shaped me today with cards from American Greetings. They have heartfelt (and funny!) words for all of the mothers in my life, including my mother in law, my grandmother, my husband’s grandmothers, and even several close friends. We all are super women in our own ways and deserve to be recognized and honored on our day and American Greetings makes it easy for me to show my affection with their beautifully designed cards.
This cray cray one is most definitely going to my sister.
As an extra surprise folded into my mom’s card this year, my kiddos and I created these fun Popsicle Stick Frames using washi tape, craft glue, and wrapping paper from American Greetings, all found at my local Walmart.
SUPPLIES
- popsicle sticks
- craft glue
- washi tape
- American Greetings tissue paper
- photos of your littles
To start, I simply lined up the popsicle sticks and secured them together with some washi tape.
Next I flipped them over and coated the sticks with craft glue.
And then I gently stuck on the tissue paper and covered it with another layer of craft glue.
Before it dried, I added a photo of my little girl.
If craft glue and little fingers makes you cringe, another variation is to simply cover each popsicle stick with washi tape.
Once the craft glue was dry, my frames were ready to be added to my mom’s Mother’s Day card.
These make great gifts for long distance relatives since they can easily be popped into a card (just be sure to add extra postage). And they make great little desk frames or kitchen decor. A magnet could easily be added to the back for a cute fridge magnet for grandma or auntie.
