Onion Soup Mix is one of my pantry staples. I use it in several recipes, the most requested of which is my Sunday Pot Roast Dinner, where I add a few tablespoons of it to a slow cooker filled with a hefty chuck roast, carrots, and potatoes. At roughly $3 per envelope of the tasty soup mix, I wanted to see if I could create my own version of the tasty Onion Soup Mix to keep stored in my pantry and to help save some grocery money. My recipe for the mixture costs just cents when compared to the envelopes you can buy in-store and my husband claims it tastes better, but he is a bit biased when it comes to his wife’s cooking.
To start, you’ll grab a mason jar. Because let’s face it, what better way to store Onion Soup Mix than in a mason jar, right?
Add two and a half tablespoons of dried chopped onion.
Several teaspoons of beef bouillon.
A teaspoon of onion powder.
A dash of salt.
And another dash of pepper.
The aroma these spices give off is positively mouthwatering!
Seal the jar and give it a few good shakes to combine it all together.
This recipe makes roughly what one store bought envelope would provide you. But I like to make several batches at a time to store for future recipes like Onion Soup Casserole, Onion Soup Meatloaf, or to even add a tablespoon or two to a Beef Stew. Onion Soup Mix is so versatile and adds tons of delicious flavor to most beef dishes. It’s definitely a great item to have on hand in your pantry and I’m never without a mason jar full of the good stuff.
