DIY Quick Sew Journaling Bible Cover

In true creative personality fashion, a blank slate will never do. My notebooks and pens, file folders and organizers all need to inspire me. I love color and surround myself with it to keep me feeling uplifted.

My journaling Bible has been a blank slate of brown for some time now and I’ve been debating how to cover it or decorate it to keep me feeling that inspired feeling when it comes time to create art with Jesus. And when I happened on a lovely lavender floral scrap of fabric in my stash, I knew it would cover my Bible.

I’m not a seamstress by any means, but I can sew a kind of straight line and was able to put together this simple journaling Bible cover in under 30 minutes. However, this could easily be recreated with fabric glue if you don’t know how to sew or have access to a sewing machine.

SUPPLIES

  • sewing machine (or fabric glue)
  • fabric of choice
  • iron
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • sewing pins

To start, I laid my Bible flat and used a ruler to measure the width of the book.

And to ensure I had flaps to cover the inside, I added on several additional inches (or the width of the front cover added).

Next I cut the width out of my fabric.

I folded and ironed one end and then laid my Bible over it again to measure the height, added a half an inch, and marked it with a pen.

Then I cut out the height from the fabric.

Folded over the extra half inch and ironed it to give me to edges, neatly folded over.

Next I folded down the width edges by about a half inch and ironed them as well.

I secured all the edges using my sewing machine. You can do this by hand or use fabric glue if you don’t know how to sew.

Once I was finished securing the edges, I laid my Bible flat over the fabric again and folded over the extra to make the flaps.journaling bible cover7

Ensuring the fabric was taught, I closed the book and marked where the flap was to be secured on both the front and back covers at the top and bottom of each cover using sewing pins.

Gently removing the fabric from the book, I secured each flap (top and bottom) with a quick run under my sewing machine.

Finally, I slipped the book into it’s new custom fit cover.

It’s a fun and simple way to add personality to your journaling Bible while also keeping it protected. For most of us who journal in our Bibles, it’s constantly around harmful products and surfaces, so having this added layer of protection is helpful.
