In just a few short days, my family and I will be sitting down to our traditional Thanksgiving feast. In our blended family, we take turns on holidays and this year we have all five of our precious kiddos at home to celebrate all that we are thankful for and enjoy a meal together until our tummies can stretch no larger.

Most everyone has their own tradition when it comes to their Thanksgiving meals. Some cover their turkey with bacon before roasting it in true hipster fashion, while others eat only canned cranberries, and some reject mashed potatoes in favor of baked yams. I’m no different and have my own idea of tradition which includes dressing made on the stove top and a perfectly seasoned ham.

Sure, Thanksgiving is all about the turkey. And I’m not one to deny that a roasted turkey is the centerpiece of the holiday meal. But for me, Thanksgiving isn’t a true Thanksgiving without a savory ham at the table. I’m such a ham gal, that when I’m attending a Thanksgiving gathering or holiday party and I know there won’t be a ham there, I take matters into my own hands and show up with one proudly in my arms. I’ve got to have a ham, folks. I’ve just got to!

And hand in hand with my ham, I need to have warm, savory, dressing to load on my plate, right next to the ham. And then I top everything off with a drizzle of gravy for a glorious Thanksgiving finale. This year, I’m sharing my recipe because it’s just too delicious to keep to myself.

To start, you’ll toast eight slices of bread in a toaster oven.

Next, you’ll chop up your toasted bread into small, bite sized chunks.

In a large pot over medium high heat, melt some butter and salt together and then add in some diced onion and garlic.

Cook the onion until it’s translucent and just starting to brown. Next add in some chicken stock, parsley, sage, celery salt, kosher salt, and pepper and bring it all to a boil.

Once you’ve got a rolling boil going, quickly add in the bread and stir it all together and then cover the pot.

Remove the post from the heat and let it sit for about five minutes. Fluff the dressing with a fork and serve immediately…with a Hormel ham, of course.
