Those who know me, know that smell-goods are my spirit animal. From wax melts to candles, filling my house with the aroma of each season and upcoming holidays makes me happy inside. My candle love started young and for my 16th birthday I asked for a Buttercream Yankee Candle® . Not a car, not makeup, just a Yankee Candle® please. Back then, you could only purchase the beloved candles at a speciality store, so imagine my excitement level when I found out you can now purchase them at Walmart (in the Home and Candle section) via the new line of American Home™ by Yankee Candle® products! With Labor Day coming up, I’m embracing apple and pumpkin scents from the American Home™ by Yankee Candle® line to set the stage for a patriotic holiday. I’ve also created a fun DIY American flag craft using old pallets from my husband’s cement plant (we have an unlimited supply, don’t be jelly) that we are displaying proudly on our fireplace mantle. If you have access to a pallet and want to recreate this for your home, it’s a cinch to make and I’m sharing my step-by-step process to create this DIY American flag pallet with you today.

To start, I enlisted the help of my husband who trimmed down my pallet to a size I could hang nicely without it overpowering the mantle.

Next, I painted a blue section for the stars. And I painted each plank alternating red and white colors.

Once the blue paint was dry, I painted on hand doodled stars. The beauty in this is the imperfections that give it a rustic look.

Lastly, I sanded down the paint to make it look slightly distressed.

I didn’t overthink this craft and kept it simple and easy to ensure it had a farmhouse feel when I hung it in my home. If you re-create this, try not to get caught up in making it perfect, just go with the flow and embrace the flaws in the wood and resulting paint job. You’ll end up with an effortless art piece for your home that you’ll love, imperfections and all.

After all of the paint was thoroughly dried, I hung it above our fireplace with help from handy husband.

While I originally made this for Labor Day, I may end up keeping this hung year-round because I love the results. And how perfect is the setting with my new American Home™ by Yankee Candle® scents sitting next to it? I wish there were such a thing as smell-o-vision because this Pumpkin Apple Harvest aroma is divine. Cinnamon and nutmeg, fall’s rich baking spices, are layered with crisp red apples and pumpkin that’s been sliced and sprinkled with a pinch of brown sugar. I may live in the desert, but it’s transporting me to a crisp fallen leaves, cool air, and fall colors setting.

This medium two-wick, 12 ounce tumbler candle was just $10.93 and contains premium-grade paraffin wax that delivers a clean, consistent burn. American Home™ by Yankee Candle® is lead-free and their 100% natural fiber wicks are hand straightened to ensure it is centered for the best burn possible. The fragrance is lasting and full from top to bottom, which is why I adore these candles above all other. You get the full scent each and every time you light your candle. For a full list of the available assortment from Walmart, visit the website and try not to lose yourself in all the yummy scents.

Tip: Be sure you always follow instructions for candle burning very carefully.

I’ve shared my excitement over how the new American Home by Yankee Candle® brand at Walmart will fit into our Labor Day celebrations, now tell me about your Labor Day plans!
