Holly’s Bible: Watercolor Ombre Technique

My journaling Bible is such a source of comfort and inspiration for me. It’s therapeutic to connect with God’s word through an outlet that I am passionate about. Combining two of my greatest passions, the Lord and paper, results in me better understanding scripture and helping me apply it to my life as a wife, mother, and blogger. This week, I made time to connect with God in my journaling Bible and created one of my favorite pages yet. Since it’s such a source of comfort for me, I’ve decided to share it with you more often (how’s monthly?) along with some of my techniques and testimony on how that particular scripture is applied to my life.

I believe God speaks to us in many ways and for me, one of those ways is directly through my Bible. On more than one occasion, I’ve flipped open my Bible to read and found that the verses spoke directly to me. Remember my weight loss struggles? This week, a similar situation happened and I turned to my Bible to reference some verses on marriage. With all five of our children in our blended family at home, it’s put a little extra weight on our anxiety levels and that can be hard on a marriage. I think it was no coincidence that when I picked up my Bible and flipped it open, it was to Matthew 7:25-34.

I spent an hour or two yesterday afternoon reflecting on these verses while I created my art on the pages. Jacob and I had just been arguing over finances, which naturally are tighter when you have five mouths to feed. We both feel pressure to provide and ensure everyone is well-fed and having fun during the summer months when we are all together. But you know what? Everyone is always well-fed in our house. In fact, probably over-fed. And the grocery bill is always somehow managed, even when we don’t know where the money will come from, it comes! The Heavenly Father knows our needs and He always delivers. These verses were His reminder to me. “Holly, I got this. The anxiety over it will do nothing for ya, sister.” I hear ya, Lord. Taking off the worry cap and grabbing the watercolors instead.

This watercolor ombre technique is one of my absolute favorites to do in my Bible. It’s always dreamy looking and imperfectly perfect. To achieve this, just start in the middle with a base color of your choice. Lilac is the color that rules all colors in my mind, so I started there. Then I went darker purple at the top of my page and a medium blue at the bottom. I mixed and blended until I got this ombre feeling page all over. Once it was dry, I embellished with letters, stickers, and doodles to emphasize what I needed to take away from this verse: He knows our needs.
