This summer I’m keeping my kids busy with one activity a day. It’s been a great way to keep the boredom away each day and it gives us quality family time together creating and experiencing things together. Last week, we made Ice Cream Play Dough from a can of frosting and a whole load of powdered sugar. It looked so realistic and was extra fun to play with when I added in ice cream scoops from the dollar store.

All you need to create this at home with your kids is a can of frosting of your choice and a whole bunch of powdered sugar.

To make this yourself, start by pouring a whole can of frosting into a mixing bowl.

Next add in a bunch of powdered sugar. I poured in just over half a bag for each can of frosting.

Turn your mixer on and let it do the work for you. Add more powdered sugar until you get to the ice-cream-like texture. If you add too much, just add in a little oil.

The dough isn’t sticky like one would think. It is pliable and feels just like any other play dough. But this kind you can eat! It’s obviously very high in sugar content, so be sure to monitor how much your kiddos consume. I was pleasantly surprised at how little my kids ate. A few bites was all they wanted and then they spent several hours playing with the dough. I found some ice cream scoops and cupcake containers at our local dollar store that I gave to them to use as they played.

Another way we keep the summer boredom blues away is with our favorite Netflix shows. This month, I’m catching up with my OITNB ladies, but my step-daughters are looking forward to watching Hiccup and Toothless, from the critically acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon films, as they embark on unparalleled adventures in the all-new Netflix original series Dragons: Race to the Edge.

Soaring beyond their home on the island of Berk in search of new dragons, Dragons: Race to the Edge introduces some of the most exciting dragons yet, each with its own amazing abilities — shock waves, cannon balls and fire blasts, just to name a few. With the magical Dragon Eye, an artifact Hiccup finds aboard an abandoned ship, Hiccup learns there is more outside the confines of Berk, and that a little curiosity and determination can make every day an exciting journey. In Hiccup’s own words, “this changes everything.” We are planning a fun family viewing night filled with dragon-friendly snacks and fun as we watch our favorite characters’ fantastical dragon adventures.
