BGCA Triple Play, a Game Plan for the Mind, Body, and Soul

My children’s health and well-being has always been a top priority for me, as it is with most every other mom, but I often forget that healthy kids doesn’t just mean brushing their teeth every night, making sure they’re active, and feeding them healthy foods. Their health also includes connecting to their community, accepting their own (and others’) differences, and realizing that their choices can have lifetime impacts. Triple Play is a Boys & Girls Club comprehensive health and wellness program that serves young people at BGCA, giving them the tools and awareness needed to put them on a path to a great future. With their mind, body, and soul approach, kids are reminded that health is a trifecta of elements.

Triple Play is supported by a multi-million dollar commitment from The Coca-Cola Company and the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation and is the biggest wellness endeavor taken on by BGCA. Working together as a team, they’re helping youth maintain physical fitness and create positive lifestyle changes. BGCA is making a difference by educating kids on the importance of active and healthy lifestyles that encompass the Triple Play trio of mind, body, and soul.

Mind

The mind approach helps kids to understand healthy living and active learning with central themes of good nutrition, regular healthcare, and overall well-being. Their Healthy Habits curriculum was developed in collaboration with the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Body

This portion of the program boosts physical activities to higher levels for all youth, ensuring inclusion of everyone. Daily fitness challenges encourage kids to play longer and harder at a variety of activities and games.

Soul

Club youth can help to create positive and lasting relationships through the social recreation portion of the program. Encouragement on self-worth and skills to cope with both positive and adverse situations are emphasized in this component of the program.

This year the key mantra for BGCA is “I FEEL BETTER WHEN…”, to encourage families to improve their health and wellness practices. This phrase helps illustrate how small, daily behavioral changes can have a lasting impact. Triple Play is focused on these types of healthy lifestyle changes at and fosters them at a young age. For my family, “WE FEEL BETTER WHEN WE ENJOY DINNER TOGETHER AT THE TABLE AS A FAMILY,” and as the mother I’m working towards ensuring we have that time to connect each day, no matter how busy we all are.
