This post is going to get really real, sisters. Hashtag no filter. Cramps. Those familiar little jerks that like to show up once a month and completely ruin our lives. Plans? No longer! Cramps are here to steal away your day! For me, cramps are debilitating and I know you gals can relate. For months now I’ve been silently wallowing in pain and simultaneously cursing myself for not remembering to purchase a heating pad before my shark week. My husband, my biggest cheerleader and craft supporter, asked me why I never made my own. And I was all….psssh, that’s way too hard…and then in my brain I was all….actually, that’s kind of genius. But you know, period rage. Then I apologized and went searching for the most obnoxious period themed fabric I could find to create my own DIY heating pad.
SUPPLIES
- fabric, a fat quarter is plenty (find my shark attack fabric here)
- sewing thread
- rice, six cups
- lavender essential oil (optional)
- dried lavender (optional)
To start, I trimmed my fabric to 12 inches by 20 inches.
And then I folded it in half, pattern side down, long ways.
Next I sewed up all three sides, leaving a small opening to allow me to add the rice.
I turned the fabric right side out and set it aside.
In a large bowl, I mixed together my rice, lavender essential oil, and dried lavender.
Next, using a funnel, I added the lavender rice to the fabric.
And finally, I secured the opening with my sewing machine (do this by hand if seeing the stitch will bother you).
To use this glorious little tool to soothe your shark week cramps, you can warm it in the microwave on high for 2-3 minutes. I’ve also read that you can warm this up in the oven on a low setting, but that terrifies me; so I’ll stick with my microwave on this one. And yes, you can use this to soothe sore muscles or even earaches, but this heating pad is reserved only for my uterus. All other family members can back off. Or make their own. Or ask me to make one for them by bribing me with chocolate. That will work too.
