Our Love Story

By Holly Sosa

When I sit down and think about it, my husband and I have a pretty romantic love story. Though we met under less than appropriate circumstances (he was in a tumultuous relationship and I was in the middle of a divorce), in the end it’s as though we were always meant to be.

Jacob and I met through online college courses when we were placed into a group project together. Sparks flew, but we quickly extinguished them as our life circumstances didn’t allow for the proper timing of a blooming romance. After a few months apart, we ended up connecting again, both out of our previous relationships and both with hearts that while mending, were also open to each other. He lived in Southern California and I lived in Las Vegas, but we began a long distance romance, spending every weekend on the road for (sometimes just a couple hours!) to visit and go on dates. Once we allowed ourselves to experience the feelings we had, the rest was destiny.

We don’t have a particularly romantic proposal story (he proposed outside my doctor’s office after we found out our baby was a girl – Evelyn!), but our marriage story is one I’ll tell over and over to our family and friends. Jacob drove the 200 miles from his Southern California home to my apartment in Las Vegas. With help from my sister and her husband, we loaded up a UHaul with all of my belongings and headed straight for a chapel. We applied for and received our marriage license and then walked over to the first chapel we found. Both of us in flip flops, me with a mid-pregnancy belly, him with no sleep (worked a graveyard shift the night before). But we were (and are!) so in love and so ready to join our lives together.

We’ve been together now for five years, married for (almost!) four and now our idea of romance is a night without farts. Ha! Really though, I find romance in our everyday and how he cares for me and our family. He does the dishes for me faithfully every night, he kisses me before he leaves the house, he draws me a bath when he knows I’ve had a hard day, and he kills the bugs (ha!). Romance looks a lot different now that we’re in the middle of doing life together. And blending our family of five kids doesn’t always leave time for romance, but with him by my side our love story is alive and well.

And when it’s time for me to have a good cry over romance, Nicholas Sparks movies and a good glass of wine aren’t far away. The new Nicholas Sparks movie, The Choice, promises to deliver exactly that. This movie is about making difficult choices of the heart to find your destiny and perfect match, which is something I can relate to given the beginnings of my relationship with my husband. Like many of Nicholas Sparks’ stories, it’s set in coastal Carolina. The main characters are first brought together due to an encounter between their dogs! Their adorable pets play an important (and adorable!) role in the story. I’m so excited to plan a date night with my husband to see this movie together, coming to theaters on February 5th. He may not outwardly admit it, but I now he secretly loves romantic Nicholas Sparks movies.

What’s your love story? Did you and your spouse meet in a fulfilled destiny type of way? Do you have an interesting wedding story? Have you had to make a difficult choice in life to be with the one you love? Let’s chat all things romance and love in the comments below, and let me know if you’re planning to see ‘The Choice’ when it arrives in theaters 2/5!
