Reasons to Use a Paper Planner

use a paper planner

My trusty paper planner and I are joined together at the hip…coil to hip…cover to hip? Whatever the case, I’m never without my planner. Having a paper planner is something I started when I was in middle school and it’s stuck with me ever since. If it weren’t for mapping out my weekly plans on paper, I wouldn’t function well because my planner helps me set and achieve daily, weekly, and monthly goals while keeping me on task. For my friends who don’t use a paper planner, I can’t share enough how well it works for me. And with 2016 here and fresh starts waiting for us, I thought I’d share reasons to use a paper planner in the new year.

Writing things out helps retain it to memory

It’s been proven time and again that the act of physically writing something down helps your brain to retain it better than typing or setting a reminder would. I know that for me personally, writing something down accesses a part of my brain that typing just doesn’t. I remember things better when I write them down. Bonus? If I forget, they’re just a quick page flip away!

It doubles as a media journal

For me, planning doubles as a sort of media journal. With unused space I can share a small story about my day or a funny thing one of my kiddos said to me. At the end of the year, I’ve got a keepsake that will be fun to pass on to my kids or look through when I’m feeling nostalgic.

Stickers! Pens! Sticky notes!

As a stationery addict, using all of these paper products makes me happy. And because I use a paper planner, I actually have use for them, ha!

It’s a place to brain dump

I often need to just get everything that’s swimming in my brain out on paper. From blog post ideas to family goals, dinner menus to organization projects, having one place where I can sort through all of that information in my brain helps keep me on task and gives me the ability to better manage my projects.

Maps out the whole week/month/year

My iPhone is fabulous, yes. But mapping out my entire week, month, and even year bogs me down on that little screen. Using my paper planner helps me to see the bigger picture, better plan for the year, and set realistic goals.

Clearly, I can’t advocate loudly enough for the paper planner. Because it’s worked so well for me in my life, I think it’s only natural that I want to share something that’s so positive for me with other people. If you’ve never used a paper planner, I invite you to challenge yourself this year and try one out. Set aside a few minutes each day to use it and reflect on your daily goals, weekly goals, and monthly goals to see if what you’re doing each day is getting you closer or not. Long live the paper planner!
