My kid’s school lunch can quickly become routine if I don’t step up my Mom game from time to time. Both my little dues love taking a packed lunch to school, but they’re never afraid to tell me when they’re sick and tired of something. I may have overplayed cookie cutter turkey and cheese shapes recently. Thankfully, I pride myself on keeping on my toes and in partnership with KRAFT Foods and Sam’s Club, I researched some new lunch ideas that I could pack for them that are fresh, easy to pack, and a welcome break from pb&j.

You may not realize it, but grilled cheese sammies are a great packed school lunch and we recently tried this out with huge success. The secret is keeping them soggy-free by allowing them to cool completely before packaging them. Here is my clever way on how to pack grilled cheese for school lunch.

Make your grilled cheese as you normally would

Simply make your grilled cheese as you normally would. For me, it’s butter on the outside sides of the bread and KRAFT Singles inside. Is there even any other cheese choice when it comes to grilled cheese? I feel like KRAFT Singles are the ultimate trophy winner in the grilled cheese lunch category…well, let’s be real, any lunch category. I stock up on these singles at my local Sam’s Club since I use them so frequently in my boys lunches.

Transfer grilled cheese to a cutting board to cool

Once your sammie is grilled to perfection, transfer it to a cutting board or plate to cool. On days you decided to pack a grilled cheese, make it before you do the rest of your morning routine so it has plenty of time to cool down. Once the sandwich is room temperature, it’s ready to be packed in a lunch pail.

Wrap the grilled cheese in tinfoil or a sandwich container

Wrap your grilled cheese in tinfoil or a plastic container. Since it’s completely cool, it won’t sweat inside (which causes soggy bread) and will remain nice and crispy until lunch time consumption.

If you’ve got it on hand, warm up some tomato soup and transfer it to a thermos. When you’re kiddo unpacks his lunch on a cold winter day, he’ll be the warmest kid in the lunch room!

Oh look, an extra grilled cheese for me? Donmindifahdo!
