6 Tips for Comforting & Caring For Your Sick Child

By Holly Sosa

Every day we’re presented with opportunities to show we care about people, but despite our best intentions, these moments often get overlooked. Kleenex Brand has inspired me to be actively looking for ways to comfort and care for people, but especially my family. My kids need me the most when they’re feeling sick, and as their main caretaker, I’ve learned some ways to soothe and treat them while letting them know I care. This list gives you several tips for comforting & caring for your sick child.

1. Set up a home base

When one of my kiddos is sick, I set up a sort of home base for them. I clean off a designated couch, cover it with a couple sheets, a pillow, and their favorite blanket. I add a small side table next to them for their Kleenex, water, and set a puke bucket up on the floor. This keeps them in their area and helps prevent the spread of germs throughout the home. All it takes to spread germs and sickness is a cough, sneeze, or an unwashed hand. The CDC suggests coughing and sneezing into a tissue and then throwing it away to prevent spreading illness to others.

2. Keep Kleenex facial tissues on hand

Stock up on Kleenex facial tissues now before cold, cough, and flu season begins. It always seems out of the blue when it happens at my house, so I pick up extra boxes at my local Walmart while I’m in the pharmacy. Noses can get rough and painful, which is why I prefer the softness of Kleenex brand and their lotion infused tissue that helps keep your nose soothed.

3. Turn on their favorite show

My kids sleep throughout the day, but having their favorite show on in the background helps for when they are awake and miserable. Anything to bring some sort of comfort to them. One of they’re favorite things is when I flip on VUDU and give them a choice to rent a movie. Movie rental = medicine. Plus when you purchase either a 4-pack of 75-ct Kleenex Ultra Soft Tissues or Kleenex Tissues with Lotion (some will have stickers that denote coupon and some will not, but all of the Lotion/Ultra Soft 4-packs are eligible), you get a $5 VUDU credit. Redeem by purchasing qualifying item and star/check the item(s) and the date of your receipt. Snap a clear photo of the entire receipt with your phone. 4. Give them a lukewarm bath

My kids always seem to feel a little better after a lukewarm bath. It can help bring down a fever and just makes them feel human again. A long bath and fresh jammies afterward are a natural way to feel better and get a little pick me up when the germs are fighting your immune system.

5. Set up a small table during the night

Similar to my home base concept, I set up a side table next to their beds at night. Keeping everything accessible to them is important when their sick to ensure their symptoms can be managed and to ensure minimal puke accidents on the carpet. Thanks but no thanks.

6. Wash their sheets every morning

While my kids are sick, I try to wash their sheets every morning. This isn’t normal practice as I’m usually a once every other week kinda mom, but when they’re fighting germs I try to do this daily. They’re sweating and miserable most of the night, coughing and sneezing. I feel like I can just see the germs all over. It helps them sleep comfortably every night, ensuring they get the rest they need to battle the germs.

Nearly 50 percent of people in the U.S. say they’ve missed an opportunity to show someone they care, according to a survey commissioned by Kleenex Brand. Kleenex Brand is proving that no matter how big or small the moment, the act of giving a Kleenex Facial Tissue to someone who needs one – whether it’s a stranger, a sick child, or even ourselves – can connect and uplift us all.
