This week my boys are back to school. Carefully chosen backpacks filled with freshly sharpened pencils, new glue sticks, and safety scissors adorn their shoulders and while I’m a little sad to see them go, I look forward to the routine and consistency school brings to all of our lives. For me, it allows me additional time to focus on getting back on track with my health and diet, gives me much needed time for myself, and helps me to carve out the time needed to manage all of our new activities (hello, karate class!). For me, I thrive on routine and organization. It’s what keeps me motivated and accountable. If you struggle with getting back on track during back to school season, fret not dear friend! I’m sharing five of my tips for getting back on track during back to school season.

1. Daily activity is essential for keeping yourself on track for health. I’ll be the first to admit that the freedom of summer left me zero motivation to get off my rear and move, but now there is no excuse. With just one child at home during the day, I’m able to ensure I’m getting some kind of daily activity in without too much of an obstacle. I’ve found that for me, the best way to do this was to get it out of the way first thing, so after I drop my kids off at school, I’ll be going for a mile to two mile long walk around the school and surrounding area and I’ll be tracking my daily activity to earn points with the Balance Rewards for healthy choices™ app.

2. Tracking food intake has been a tool I’ve long used to see what and how much I consume each day. It also helps me to steer clear of unhealthy choices since I know I’ll have to enter it.

3. Time management is key for success when achieving your health and fitness goals. I ensure I make time once a week to create a schedule and even work hours. Mornings are for getting the kids ready and my daily activity (that morning walk we talked about in tip #1), afternoons are for housework and laundry, evenings are for meal prep and packing school lunches, and so on. Sitting down to examine how many hours you have in a day and then maximizing the time you have is essential!

4. Be prepared for anything! I use the Walgreens Balance Rewards for healthy choices™ app to track my family’s prescriptions, stay on track with my fitness goals, and even earn rewards for things I’m already doing daily! Make every healthy choice rewarding. Looking to manage your weight, exercise more often, quit smoking or boost your overall health? Regular tracking can help you reach your goal. The Balance Rewards for healthy choices initiative rewards members for walking, weight management and more. You can also earn points simply by purchasing items you already need for back to school. I’m armed to the brim for back to school season with Motrin IB, Neosporin and Band-Aids for those unexpected playground booboos.

5. Make time for you. As a busy mom, I struggle with making time for myself. After all, I have all my little people (and one big person – hey husband!) who depend on me for so much. But if I make my health a priority, I’m ensuring I stick around for the long haul while also setting a positive example for all my people.
