Sock Bubbles, a Silly Summer DIY

If you’ve been following my family on social media, you know that this summer is our Summer of Activities and I’ve scheduled a new activity for us to create together every single day. With two previous summers under my belt in our large and in charge blended family, I’ve quickly learned that having something to look forward to everyday is essential in keeping the boredom away.

Last week, we created sock bubbles and this simple DIY was the easiest we’ve done by far and provided us with hours of fun. We used items we already had in the house and I spent exactly zero dollars for these contraptions. They created a huge amount of bubbles and we had contests to see who could create the longest bubble snake. We experimented with food coloring and making bubbles on different surfaces.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • scissors
  • rubberbands
  • socks
  • empty waterbottles
  • dish soap
  • food coloring (optional)

Start by cutting off the bottom portion of a water bottle.

Next, trim the tube portion of the sock off, leaving just the bottom part of the sock.

Turn the sock inside out and pull over the end of the water bottle.

Use a rubber band to secure the sock to the water bottle.

Dunk the sock in a solution of dish soap and water (half and half worked for us) and blow bubbles! Add food coloring directly to the sock to experiment with colors and create amazing rainbow bubbles.

We had so much fun with this (yes, even the adults!) and the kids have asked that we save their bubble blowers for use again and again. One of my favorite parts about this craft is that it involves repurposing would-be trash items to create a reusable toy that provides tons of fun!
