People who know our family, know we do weekend sleepouts. Sleepout nights require copious blankets and pillows strewn across the living room floor, popcorn, and a movie. The kids take turns choosing a Netflix movie or show and get to stay up late (as long as it stays quiet) for a living room camp out of sorts. It’s one of our favorite ways to spend time together as a family and it switches up the routine enough for the kids to feel special. I like the create a daily activity beforehand that’s themed around the movie we will watch that evening. This week it was a dragon taming movie filled with brave nights and an epic battle to save a kingdom.
Since the routine gets a little mixed up, this occasionally causes a bedwetting (or rather carpet wetting?) accident for Aiden. At just five, the excitement will sometimes get the best of him and he will wake up to wet jammies and blankets. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics indicates that children who wet the bed do not enjoy or even have the desire to participate in fun activities, such as sleepovers, because of their fear and embarrassment. Thankfully, Aiden’s accidents happen at home, but he still gets upset enough that he is embarrassed and anxious about sleepout nights.
