Things I Want to Remember

Gosh children grow so fast, don’t they? That’s something we moms like to say because it’s true. Cliche, but you realize just how true those words are when you’re actually witnessing it happen in life. It’s completely wild to feel both excitement and pride simultaneously with sadness and panic when your child goes through milestones. I recently braided Evelyn’s hair after bath time in a futile attempt to tame her curls before bed. When I finished and stepped back to take in my work, I realized just how long her hair had gotten and how grown she suddenly looked. That’s one moment of many mother’s have where we are filled with happiness, but also sadness at the same time. This is why we seemingly have random crying episodes or why we say our heart’s will explode. The love we feel literally makes us believe our hearts could burst.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to document the special personality traits each of my children shares with me. I can’t freeze time and I wouldn’t want to, despite what my aching heart thinks. But I can document these special moments I’ve been given with them. I thought I’d write down adorable quips, memories, and freeze them here instead. It’s my hope that I can encourage you to write down a few special things about your child that makes them tug those heartstrings.

1. Evelyn often runs around the house singing a tune and dancing. I love hearing her little lah lah, lah lah’s.

2. Evelyn’s wild curls are often in her face. When she is focused on something or showing off her dancing skills, she brushes those pesky curls out of her face with her entire hand. Palm, fingers, and all.

3. They way Collin says Burritos instead of Doritos.

4. Our family inside joke with Collin and Aiden we share on taco night without fail. You want chicken and cheese and LOTS OF HOT SAUCE?!

5. How Collin always speaks to Evelyn in the highest, shrillest voice he can muster.

6. Andria’s deep desire to be a mother shines through in her gentle caring for Evelyn. She places forgotten bottles in the sink, brings Evelyn a blanket when she’s winding down, informs me of even the slightest diaper sagging for a change, and always kisses her goodnight (even though Miss E has a serious attitude before bed time).

7. MJ’s place of in-between. Longing to be treated like an adult, but also genuinely enjoying watching Monster High cartoons. She’s really so mature for her age and such a huge help around the house.

8. Aiden’s seemingly random and intense needs to come over to tell me he loves me.

9. How the boys call each other bro. Who even are they?

10. Collin. Never. Stops. He is always moving, jumping, playing. It may exhaust me now, but I know the constant buzz of activity will be something I miss when he’s grown.

As parents, I feel like we are forever standing with one foot in the future and one in the present, but I’ll be damned if the present isn’t just as sweet. Each of my children has something to offer me right this very minute and I want to remember to soak them in, Burritos and all.
