This may come as a surprise given the size of my (very large!) blended family of seven, but we are a one vehicle family. My little Hyundai Elantra has given us several good years, brought home two babies from the hospital, has seen us through countless trips to and from Vegas and Oxnard to drop off and pick up our kiddos, and has been a dependable part of our lives. With close to 150,000 miles on the odometer, we know prioritizing the care of our car is essential if we plan to keep depending on it. We have used one car for several years now as a plan to help us better afford our dream vehicle: a minivan. With our minivan finally on the horizon, we know we will be depending on my little blue, high mileage car for many more years as a secondary vehicle. Today, I’m sharing three important ways you can care for your own high mileage vehicle based on our family’s experience depending on one as our sole source of transportation.

1. Caring for our car with regular oil changes is one of the ways we help ensure it has a long life. Pennzoil offers an oil made specifically for high mileage vehicles like mine. Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle Oil helps reduce leaks and oil consumption in higher mileage engines. It’s a motor oil that is specially created for vehicles with over 75,000 miles, to help keep the engines running clean and strong for a long time. From June 10th through September 9th, you can get a Pennzoil oil change on rollback at Walmart Auto Care Center stores (High Mileage $35.88, compared to the regular Walmart price of $39.88; industry standard is $46). We took advantage of this steal and took in our dependable blue car before we made the three hour drive home from Las Vegas after our two week trip to Michigan.

Be sure to check out Pennzoil on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest on their products and care care.

2. Regular tire rotation, replacements, and checks are another way we save money while caring for our vehicle using Walmart’s Auto Care Centers. They consistently offer the most affordable replacements, service, and assistance. There’s no excuse to not use their services to keep maintenance up on our car when they’re conveniently located right where I do my grocery shopping. There is nothing worse than sitting in an auto center waiting room. I love that I can get two errands done simultaneously and give myself peace of mind with my high mileage car being taken care of.

3. Keeping a service log is a handy way to troubleshoot should any issues arise. Jacob keeps a small notebook in the center console of our car where he keeps track of oil changes, tire rotations, repairs, and anything else he does to the car. Not only is this a great way to troubleshoot, but it will also help when or if you decide to sell the car. Potential buyers will appreciate the tracking of maintenance and repairs while also feeling that they’re purchasing a used car that’s been properly cared for.

Being a one vehicle family has certainly given us a unique set of challenges, but keeping proper care of our little blue car has afforded us the ability to depend on it while we save for our future minivan (next month, fingers crossed!). If you’ve got a high mileage vehicle, consider implementing these three simple ways to care for it. They have worked for us and I know they can help you.
