5 Things to Expect Your First Week on Medifast

Several of you have approached me individually to ask me questions about Medifast and most of those questions are about the first week and what to expect. Today I’m sharing 5 things to expect your first week on Medifast along with how I dealt with them.

1. Eating frequently: On the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan, you eat six meals daily. While they are small portions, it takes some getting used to. I used to skip breakfast and often lunch, so eating four meals when I was eating none was an adjustment. To help me remember to eat, I have an alarm set on my phone for each meal. It also helps me to lay out my food choices for the next day before I go to bed at night.

2. Withdrawal symptoms: While on Medifast, your body will enter a stage of ketosis, which often results in some symptoms. For me, those symptoms included headaches, fatigue, and general moodiness. Since I was also cutting out Diet Coke cold turkey, I experienced these symptoms two fold. If you know you have bad eating habits and consume high amounts of carbs, expect to experience some of these, “withdrawal symptoms,” as I have come to call them.

3. Cravings: Your first three days on the program are instrumental to your success. If you can stick to your plan for those first three days, you are truly setting yourself up for success. Making it through those first few days can be hard and you will inevitably crave your favorite foods. For me, it was chocolate and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cave several times. If you do cave, which is perfectly human and normal, just pick yourself back up and resume the plan. It took you an entire lifetime to learn your current eating habits, have faith in yourself to learn some new ones.

4. Some anxiety: Worrying if you’re doing things right, how you’ll handle the Friday donuts in the office, or what to eat at a weekend party are all perfectly normal. The Medifast program is made easy and allows you to take control of your health.

5. Weight loss: One huge difference I noticed almost immediately (my first week) was my gut going down. You will lose weight on the Medifast program if you stick with it. You just will.
