My stepson’s birthday is right around the corner and as an official big boy at five years old, he just couldn’t be more excited. This week promises to be filled with birthday party prep, house cleaning, and present buying. Most of you who have followed this blog of mine for some time know that I write a letter to my children each year on their birthdays. It’s a tradition I used to share publicly, but I have since started writing my letters inside a private card that will become a birthday keepsake for years to come.

For Aiden’s birthday letter, I wanted to make sure I chose a card that reflected his current personality and also what he’s into, which among many things, is The Avengers. He requested a turtle themed party, which I’m going to do my very best to make for him, as my sworn motherhood duties call for. But the boy loves his super heroes and he and Collin forever play Avengers games with each other these days. When choosing the keepsake card I write in each year, I want to make sure it’s special, relevant to his life at the time, and will withstand the test of time (and hopefully the wear and tear from several reads over his life). The new line of ©2015 MARVEL Avengers cards from Hallmark, available at Walmart, worked perfectly for this year’s letter.

If you’re thinking of starting your own yearly birthday letters tradition, here are some things I include each year:

  • my child’s current likes and dislikes
  • silly ways my child pronounces or says things
  • my child’s favorite foods and the foods they fight me the most on
  • major events that happened that year (dedication, preschool, etc)
  • what their heart looks like at this moment in time (kind, strong-willed, stubborn, caring)
  • my hopes for my child’s future
  • what being their mom/stepmom was like for me that year

At five years old, Aiden doesn’t grasp the true meaning of these letters, but I know he will look back on them later in life with adoration, seeing my actual handwriting, and knowing how loved he was by his stepmama. I love that Hallmark still sees the importance of a hand-written card or letter and helps me to give that special gift in a fun way that reflects each of my children’s personalities.
