When I Became Mom

By Holly Sosa

I can’t help but feel nostalgic when Mother’s Day comes around. I remember the first moment I became mom. All it took was a positive pregnancy test. The digital screen of my Clearblue test screamed “pregnant” at me and I was mom. All in that one precious moment. I spent the next nine months taking belly photos, buying tiny clothes, celebrating each week, and indulging in my every craving (hello Sonic french fries with honey mustard allllll over). And yes, I still have the test saved in Collin’s baby book. Though the results are long gone, it’s a physical piece of our history together.

Since I had experienced the loss of my son, Liam, just half a year prior to an incompetent cervix, I was apprehensively excited, but it was difficult to keep my fears and concerns at bay. My first visit to the perinatologist is one I will never forget. He sat me up after my ultrasound, looked me right in the eyes, and promised me I would come home with my baby. He had a plan of action that he explained in detail and in terms I could understand. We scheduled a cerclage procedure (a small stitch placed in your cervix to keep baby safe inside) for 14 weeks. He gave me his personal cell phone number, a hug, and wiped my tears before leaving to visit his next patient.

We told my mom with a little gift: my pregnancy test wrapped up in a gift bag. She squealed, she jumped, she cried, and she called all of her friends. “I’M GOING TO BE A GRANDMA!” Pregnancy reveals always make me sob with joy. Loving this montage Clearblue put together. Grab a tissue, friends.

My cerclage procedure went smoothly, and I somehow felt like I could breathe again. Despite my swollen body…who even knew your nose could swell…and painful stretch marks, I was officially mom. Clearblue declared it for me just weeks earlier. And while I felt it form that first moment, now I was embracing it.

Friends, can we all have a moment of silence for my belly? It will never be the same again. I was in pain and the slightest touch on my belly made me wince. Advice: don’t touch a pregnant woman’s belly unless she gives you permission. This could be hiding under her adorable maternity tee.

At my regular weekly appointment with my perinatologist for blood pressure monitoring and an ultrasound to check on my cervix, we discovered Collin had decided he’d had enough time inside my cramped belly and make a poop inside the fluid. We sped to the hospital and I was prepped for an emergency c-section. Since he was just on the cusp of prematurity, he was allowed a quick kiss from Mama and Daddy before being whisked to the NICU. All nine pounds of him.
