It’s almost time to fall back on our clocks, which is a perfect time to swap out your smoke detector batteries, as prompted by the Energizer® Change Your Clock Change Your Battery™ campaign. Here in the High Desert, we take fire safety extremely seriously, as one small spark can ignite a monstrous fire due to the dry climate. My two boys enjoy talking about fire safety and they’re so adorably serious about our fire drills and rules. With our annual battery change coming up, I thought it would be a great time to refresh our fire safety knowledge with a fun, themed, fire breathing dragon craft to help my kiddos engage with fire safety rules.
SUPPLIES
- green plastic or paper cups
- red, orange, and yellow streamers
- tape
- glue
- craft puffs
- craft eyeballs
- scissors
To begin crafting your dragon, you’ll trim out the bottom of the cup with your scissors.
Next, you’ll trim several pieces of each color streamer. I used two of each color.
Adhere the streamers, which create your fire, to the inside brim (drinking edge) of your cup using tape or glue.

Add puffs to the edge of the brim to create a dragon nose.

On two larger puffs, adhere a craft eyeball on each.

One the eyeballs are secured and dry, adhere them to the end of your dragon for big scary eyeballs.

Allow everything to dry completely before playing with them.
Once your dragons are dry, you can blow through the bottom of them to create fun streamer fire as if you were breathing fire yourself!

My little dudes love these dragons and I love that it starts a dialogue about fire safety while also fostering creativity and inspiring play. One thing families can do to inspire fire safety is to talk with their kids. My boys certainly keep me accountable. They’re good at reminding me of all kinds of things, am I right mamas? I teach them to follow rules, and they love it when they can remind me to follow the rules too. Make it a rule in your house: When the time changes, so do the batteries in your smoke detectors!
We swap out our batteries for the Energizer® MAX® 9volt battery, which is the size most smoke alarms require. But most importantly, Energizer® is the battery brand we trust most with our family’s safety.

Energizer created the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program 28 years ago because they care about keeping families safe. Throughout this important program, they have donated more than 5 million batteries to help ensure families have working smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 71% of non-functioning smoke alarms had missing, disconnected or dead batteries. The goal of the Energizer® Change Your Clock Change Your Battery is to help remind everyone to replace the batteries in their home’s smoke detectors during the same time they change their clocks for daylight savings to ensure everyone has functioning smoke alarms. Take the necessary action now, today. Buy new batteries for your smoke alarms. Make sure you know where all your smoke detectors are and make sure they’re working.
