OK, so I know Arctic Monkeys members Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Matt Helders and Nick O’Malley are all older than me, but that doesn’t change the fact that I feel like a proud mother to the band – come on, I’ve been a fan for nearly a decade!
My pride this week stems from a chanceful moment last night when, thanks to the sudden death of my phone battery, I tuned into KROQ as I was driving home from the store.
The radio station was halfway through its “Furious 5 at 9” segment, which plays the top five songs of the day. I caught it at No. 3 – New Politics’ “Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens) – and paid no attention to the second best song of the night.
What really caught my attention was hearing the opening riff to Arctic Monkeys, “R U Mine?”
It was my first time hearing the song on any mainstream radio – though they play “Do I Wanna Know?” and “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” on repeat it seems.
My first thought, was, it’s about damn time! “R U Mine?” was first released April, 2012 as a special single for Record Store Day, and was later found as the second track on AM, the band’s fifth studio album.
Why it took the mainstream crowd three years to catch up to the “hype” is beyond me, but I’m just happy my lovely lads are getting lots of recognition state side these days.
So, as a little ode to my favorite band, here’s to your No. 1 spot Arctic Monkeys — the song was also first premiered on KROQ’s radio station.
Also, late Happy Birthday to front man Turner, who turned 29 on Jan. 6.
