This year, back to school marks a new season in my son, Collin’s, life. His father lives three hours away and he will be seeing him a little less during the school year as our son begins Kindergarten, which makes for two hearts that will be doing a whole lot of missin’. Thankfully, both Daddy and I have smart phones with great data plans to keep in constant communication. It’s been roughly three weeks since Collin started school and we’ve already figured out a few creative ways to get his Daddy involved.<\/p>\n

This year, Collin’s class learns ten new sight words (a sight word is a commonly used word that children are asked to memorize by sight) each week. He is sent home with a list every Monday and tested on Friday. This is his only homework and just happens to be the perfect kind of homework for our family’s situation. When I receive the new list on Monday, I text it to Collin’s Daddy and he creates a set of flash cards. Every night before bed, Collin video calls his Dad for a sight word lesson and run through. He’s usually mastered the words within a day or two, but consistency is key where sight words are concerned.<\/p>\n
