Living in the desert, summer typically brings astronomical temperatures and with them terrifying energy bills. One year, we received a $350 electric bill. After I scraped myself off of the floor and sold one of my kidneys on the black market to pay for it (kidding!), I made some changes around our house to help conserve energy, save water, live greener, and lower the crazy energy costs desert life is infamous for. It’s been three years since I opened that kidney-robbing bill and since then, I’ve cut our electric and water bills in half with just a few simple tricks and tips. I’m sharing five of these money saving and green living ideas with you today.

5 Simple Green Living Tips for Desert Life

1. Use blackout curtains. These curtains help block out the sun and keep it from baking your bedrooms, which will require more energy from your AC to cool down. Each of our four bedrooms has thick curtains that keep the sun away throughout the day.

2. Install ceiling fans. Aside from our kitchen, every single room in our home has a ceiling fan. These help circulate the cool air that our AC gives us, which in turn makes it last longer. At night, it enables us to turn off our AC completely and use only the fans, saving a ton of energy.

3. If you can afford to, install solar panels. This is pretty self-explanatory, but these ingenious panels harvest the power of the desert sun and use them to power your entire house.

4. Use low flow faucets and toilets. Water is the biggest problem for desert life. Currently, California is in a terrible drought and with our wet season officially over, we need to conserve as much as we can. These faucets and toilets are specifically designed to save our precious resource, and conveniently, will save you some dough on your water bill.

5. Replace your batteries with Eco-Advanced batteries. In my desert dwelling experience, batteries lose power more quickly than elsewhere. My theory, and I’m no expert, is that the added heat depletes the energy from the batteries faster. We swapped out all of our smoke detector, mouse, and remote batteries with new Energizer Eco-Advanced ones. We used to blow through AA and AAA batteries so frequently that they were costing us just as much as our water and electric bills. I discovered the Eco-Advanced batteries at Walmart recently. They are the first battery to use recycled materials and batteries and they are Energizer’s longest lasting alkaline ever! Another fun fact: they hold a charge in storage for up to twelve years!
